Guitar Capo

There are many different designs of guitar capo’s. All of them try to do the exact same job however not all of them do it equally well! A lot depends upon the actual design of the capo itself and upon the shape of your guitar neck which is directly related to the kind of guitar you own.

For example, there are some guitars, such as nylon string classical guitars, which have significantly wider fretboards than steel string acoustic guitars. While one capo will fit a wider neck perfectly, it may well struggle to fit properly over the other. This is why it’s always important to check that the capo you wish to purchase will in fact fit the neck of the guitar you own.

Not all capos are created equal!

Why Do You Need A Capo? What Does It Do?

Well, a capo will allow you to play songs in many different keys without having to actually change the chords. What this means for beginners is that you can essentially keep using all the open beginner guitar chords you already know yet play across a wide range of keys.

To do this you simply move your capo to a different position along your guitar fretboard and play the exact same sequence of chords in front of it. Simple! You have basically transposed the song into a totally new key. This can help you to play along with the original recording without having to employ barre chords and also help you to adjust the overall tonnal center of a song to better suit your singing voice. Both are very useful applications.

In other styles of guitar such as flamenco guitar, a capo is used is primarily used a device to change over all sound quality of the music and nothing to do with making the song easier to play or to change its key.

How To Tune Your Guitar Properly   no comments

Posted at 3:36 pm in Learn To Play Guitar

Learning how to tune your guitar properly is something which all guitar players must learn to master completely, after all, a badly tuned instrument will ruin the sound of any guitar player no matter how good or bad they are.

It’s a myth that guitar tuning is a beginners skill, it’s not. At best it’s something which you really have to spend a lot of time and practice doing. You need a quiet place so you can fully concentrate on tuning your guitar so that all chords and strings are equally balanced.

It’s not just about making sure the the guitar tuner is giving you a green light and saying that each string is in tune, it’s also about using your ear to check the octaves of notes between the strings and the harmonics too.

Having the intonation set up correctly on your guitar is absolutely vital. No matter how cheap or expensive your guitar is you should take it to a guitar store and ask a professional there to check your guitar intonation. The adjustments are quite minute so that’s why it’s best not to attempt to do it yourself.

Nylon stringed guitars tend to be just that little bit harder to tune up perfectly when compared to steel string acoustic guitars or electric guitars. The strings are more supple and likely to stretch out of tune.

Online Guitar Lessons

The rapid growth of online guitar lessons has been immense in recent years probably due to the fact that the speed of video streaming over the internet has become so much faster. The other reason is that many video sharing sites have a massive amount of free virtual guitar lessons available to watch and learn from. This kind of promotion only serves to increase the awareness of guitar lessons over the internet and to also promote their effectiveness.

The biggest rivals in these kinds of guitar website lessons are probably Jamplay.com and GuitarTricks.com. They are like the clashing titans and both offer a very sleek website design with a great video interface for watching all the lessons. You’ll also find they both offer guitar instruction in a wide variety of styles using different tutors. This is what sets them apart from many other smaller/bedroom guitar sites. They operate a larger business with dedicated people for each facet of the business.

I think the debate about whether or not online guitar lessons are effective in teaching you how to play guitar is pretty much over at this point. With millions of people learning guitar this way it’s a sure sign that this trend has caught on and will continue for years to come.

The great advantage is that it’s simply the cheapest way to learn guitar and you can fit it easily into your existing schedule choosing to practice only when it suits you instead of being tied down to a set appointment each week. Plus you get to watch the lessons as many times as you like and actually build up your own library of video guitar lessons.
