Learning how to tune your guitar properly is something which all guitar players must learn to master completely, after all, a badly tuned instrument will ruin the sound of any guitar player no matter how good or bad they are.

It’s a myth that guitar tuning is a beginners skill, it’s not. At best it’s something which you really have to spend a lot of time and practice doing. You need a quiet place so you can fully concentrate on tuning your guitar so that all chords and strings are equally balanced.

It’s not just about making sure the the guitar tuner is giving you a green light and saying that each string is in tune, it’s also about using your ear to check the octaves of notes between the strings and the harmonics too.

Having the intonation set up correctly on your guitar is absolutely vital. No matter how cheap or expensive your guitar is you should take it to a guitar store and ask a professional there to check your guitar intonation. The adjustments are quite minute so that’s why it’s best not to attempt to do it yourself.

Nylon stringed guitars tend to be just that little bit harder to tune up perfectly when compared to steel string acoustic guitars or electric guitars. The strings are more supple and likely to stretch out of tune.
